Program Note
Set in the era of Stalin′s Great Purge, this fast-paced thriller centers around a Soviet captain admired by his peers and commanders alike. But soon the ruthless leader gets a taste of his own medicine: Captain Volkonogov is hunted down by his former colleagues, and comes to realize that there may be no escape from the everlasting torment. Russian directors Natasha Merkulova and Aleksey Chupov, partners in life and in cinema, have crafted a poignant drama of spiritual repentance. Actor Yuriy Borisov leads the film with his striking presence and his exquisite portrayal of a vulnerable man tormented by his past. The editing is smooth and fluid, as the camera follows the perils of Volkonogov without beautifying or idealizing the events. (Karen PARK)
