Three friends volunteer to make a humanitarian trip to the mountains, and when their car gets stuck in a ditch, they are forced to spend the night in the woods. A lonely old man they meet on the road appears to be delusional, perhaps suffering from dementia, and the gruff Romani father and son passing by extend a friendly hand but fail to tow their car. After numerous attempts to get a mobile signal the town officials answer that they cannot send a rescue team until the next morning. With what seems like a perfect setting for a horror movie on the edge of civilization, director Radu Muntean builds a skillful and powerful study of human character that challenges ideas about altruism in the form of satirical hyperrealism. The clever use of documentary-style camera work and non-professional actors accentuate the stark contrast between two worlds, especially in the ending scene, which will linger in viewers′ minds long after the screening in its depiction of how do-righters sometimes get it all wrong.
