At a prison in Rome, inmates rehearse for the staging of Shakespeare’s 『Julius Caeser』. The prisoners connect with their roles in the script as the tragic tale parallels their own lives: they are also faced with conflicts as they develop asense of achievement from their theatre production experience. There are no limits for this startling film, the most recent work by the Italian Veteran directors, Taviani brothers explore far beyond the set contextual background. Known for their acute realism, Tavianis do more than capturing the dynamics of the prison: filmed at a real prison, with inmates as their star actors, they reflect on contemporary Italian politics. Blending of reality and fiction has been Taviani brothers’ signature style and their pursued cinematic world. Actual inmates play fictional characters: as they go back and forth from their cell to the stage, in the process, they cross the boundary of reality and drama. The exhilarating performance of Brutus played by Salvatore Striano adds to the blurring of the actual and the artifice.
