Program Note
Like thousands of women in Kosovo, Fahrije is struggling to provide for her father-in-law and children since her husband has gone missing in the war. She obtains a driver's license and launches a small business to produce homemade pepper sauce, but the traditional villagers consider her slightest ambition of entrepreneurship as a defiance against the patriarchal society. Based on a true story, Hive carefully crafts an empowering feminist dialogue around the women's small triumphs, through their fight for survival, resilience against prejudice, and solidarity of workers. And finally, when Fahrije's stoic face transforms and she starts wearing a proud smile on her face, their collective will has achieved a healing ritual for those mourning their loved ones. The debut feature of Blerta Basholli scored top honors at Sundance, taking home the Grand Jury Prize, Directing Award and Audience Award. (Karen PARK)
