This, last part of Fruit Chan′s ′Trilogy of Hong Kong Handover,′ is a self-portrait of Hong Kong during a period of transition seen through the eyes of a nine-year boy. Fruit Chan chooses the normal daily routines of ordinary people over the underworld. Little Cheung goes out on deliveries to help out his father who runs a small restaurant. He meets a dishwasher girl, Fan and becomes good friends with her. Little Cheung lives through Hong Kong undergoing great transition, yet he is too young to understand the true meaning of such changes. He just perceives the fact that he has begun to learn Mandarin and salute in mainland style simply as a part of the curriculum. It is not until he parts with his loved ones such as Fan, his grandmother and his Filipino maid that he enters adulthood. Through Little Cheung′s coming-of-age, Fruit Chan represents Hong Kong in the stage of transition. Illegal immigrants from the mainland are still a social problem in Hong Kong while prostitution and underworld transactions co-exist with the lives of ordinary people. And it is within this environment that Little Cheung maintains his livelihood. (Kim Ji-Seok)
