Program Note
Based on the a novel by Hanif Kureishi (of My Beautiful Laundrette and Sammie and Rosie Get Laid fame), My Son the Fanatic reverses the roles of the young and the old. Although he has not had the financial success of his fellow members of the Pakistani community, Parvez, a taxi driver, loves the life in his adopted country, England. But when his son, Farid, converts to radical Moselm fundamentalism, and his wife, Minoo, begins to support him, Parvez feels alienated. Increasingly isolated and misunderstood by his wife and son who rant against Western hedonism, Parvez falls in love with the prostitute Bettina.
