Program Note
Sometimes movies are remembered for their sceneries and atmospheres. A Day Off focuses on the atmosphere of space, especially among Director LEE Man-hee’s filmography, who boasted a wide range of spectra, from popular narrative genres to genre experimentation. Following a tough Sunday of poor lovers HEO Wook (SHIN Sung-il) and Ji Yeon (JEON Jiyeon), the film is considered the essence of Korean modernist films in the 1960s. With the realistic scenery on the streets of Seoul, the familiar landscapes of everyday life spread to the anxiety and depression of the times in line with the tired and sad realities the lovers face. The film was banned at the time of its release for reasons of gloom and decadence, but was found and restored in 2005. (SONG Kyungwon)
