Program Note
Inspired by Michel Tournier′s short story, "Le Coq de Bruyere," Yvan Le moine′s feature debut somehow recalls Kafka from the onset of the film. Whether this can be related to Soderbergh′s black & white film about Kafka, or Kafka′s novel "Transformation," the expressive aesthetics of this film create a world of grotesque images that defy expectations. The dwaft Lucien Lhotte, with no choice but to remain a small man-child for the rest of his life, works in an attorney′s office. Sitting in a tall chair, the bulk of his work is in writing scathing letters of well-mannered curses for his clients. Taking an interest in his extraordinary writing skills, a countess invites him to her mansion. This visit leads him to taste a decadent sweetness that his physical defect prohibited him from knowing during the past thirty years of his life. As the door to desire opens wide, Lucien indulges himself. As he is released from his depressive reality, however, he also becomes involved on a deep path of crime. Finally, he finds a world of dreams and imagination symbolized by a circus, and becomes a guardian angel to an angelic little girl who performs on a tightrope. (K. Jin Yoon)
