Program Note
December 30, 1999, Albert, 35 years old, runs a chips stand that is situated on the North and South border of the two conflicting communities of Brussels: the Flemish and the francophones. When he hands his customers their chips, he is in Flanders but when he fries his potatoes, he is on the francophone side. Albert also gives out a fortune-cookie message with each order. Customers flock to his stand on the eve of the third millenium to get a hint of what tomorrow holds. But on December 31, to Albert′s unimaginable horror, he is confronted by the image of his shop cut in two by an immense wall marking the border between the Flemish and the francophones.
