In 1910， Shigenobu Okuma the president of M Pathe Shokai decided to provide financial support and to record the South Pole expedition of a Japanese group run by the lieutenant Shirase. Taizumi Yasunao， who knew about cinematography， from M Pathe Shokai joined with the expedition team. The expedition was not succeeded but the film by Taizumi was shown for the first time in 1912， Tokyo and given enthusiastic response from the mass audience.
