Program Note
Recently divorced, 72-year-old Violeta lives alone in her childhood house, tending to her lush tropical garden and visiting with the ghosts of her parents. Determined to enjoy her newfound freedom, she takes swimming lessons and rents out a room to her instructor, a middle-aged man with dreams of his own. When she applies for a loan to turn her property into a boarding house, she discovers her exhusband mortgaged the house and she’s about to lose everything. With a perspective both intimate and feminine, Violeta at Last portrays the journey of an iconoclastic woman willing to break all the rules to hold onto her home and her independence. In lightly, comedic touch, the film shows the challenge of life and searching for the freedom are from never dying human spirit no matter how old you are. Not only from Violeta’s own perspective but from those from her family and friends, the film shows her challenges fighting against all the prejudice are what we all have to keep in life.
