Program Note
Before entering a prestigious American university, Gabriel decides to travel the world for one year, his backpack full of dreams. After ten months on the road, he arrives in Kenya where he is joined by his girlfriend. But discovering Africa as a tourist is not enough for Gabriel. He decides to go deeper, leaving on his own for a journey across countries, new friendships and raw emotions to finally reach Mount Mulanje in Malawi, his final destination. Based on a true event, the second feature Gabriel and the Mountain directed by Fellipe Gamarano Barbosa, who debuted with Casa Grande, follows Gabriel’s journey in documentary-style camera capturing the protagonist and the surroundings, unlike the classic plot of travelogue where an actual journey mirrors protagonist’s inner growth or stream of mind. Juxtaposing Gabriel’s personal interactions with his girlfriend, people he meets to the places captured in realistic way, the film allows us to see the young man’s backpacking more than just a romantic one.
