Program Note
Broke, with nothing but her cat, Paula is back in Paris after a long absence to make a fresh start. And she continues a self-centered adventure. Léonor Serraille follows a Parisienne in her 30s, one who had been fairly well-off until she broke up with a boyfriend. Now she has no house or job and has to do whatever odd job in order to survive. Getting help from a woman she meets for the first time in a subway and barely making a living by working at a shopping mall, she slowly learns about the world. Paula has everything her own way, but she grows on the audience with her honesty and warm-heartedness. This film features a protagonist who represents the younger generation in their 30s in France, one facing a hard road ahead of it—an issue that will resonate with Korean audiences as well. Montparnasse Bienvenüe was awarded the Camera d’Or for best debut feature at the Cannes Film Festival this year. (RHEE Souewon)
