Based on the director’s own true story and superbly depicting the world of children, Summer 1993 follows Frida, a child of few words, capturing details of not only children’s behavior, but also some of what’s in their minds, encouraging viewers to create meaning themselves via sporadic glimpses of the girl’s world. Using her eyes to observe the surroundings at the beginning, and then the third eye to capture her in a natural rhythm, the film brilliantly reconstructs these moments of her childhood. Summer 1993 is a poignant and moving film, mostly set in beautiful countryside, a masterpiece that won the Best First Feature Award at Berlinale 2017. When the end credits appear, viewers will already be looking forward to Carla Simón’s next film. (RHEE Souewon)
