Program Note
Jeongho, the son of a government official, and Jaok, a government minister’s daughter, are in love. Jaok’s father doesn’t approve of the relationship and sends her away to be a concubine for the king—a move that could all too knowingly improve his own fortunes. But the king, seeing through the father’s ambitions, scorns Jaok. Still madly in love, Jeongho, in order to gain entry into the palace to see Jaok, becomes a eunuch and the two star-crossed lovers begin to meet in secret. Produced by Lee’s own film company, Dooseong Film Company, Eunuch is a well-made romantic epic that was a box office success. Lee Doo Yong evidently directed the film without ever having seen Shin Sang-ok’s 1968 original.
Director
LEE Doo Yong
Lee debuted with the melodrama The Lost Wedding Veil (1970), but became known for his six taekwondo action films, particularly Manchurian Tiger (1974). His interest in shamanism led to The Early Years (1977), Muldori Village (1979) and The Hut (1980). By the 1980s, he was making some of his best works including The Last Witness (1980), The Trouble-Solving Broker (1981), Mulleya Mulleya (1983), The Oldest Son (1984), and Eunuch (1986).
