Program Note
Sodol, recently released from jail after serving 5 years for suspicion of murder, moves back to his island home following the death of his mother. Soon after his return, seaweed that’s being farmed starts to go rotten and a long-dead corpse is discovered. The villagers believe Sodol is the cause of these dark omens and begin to shun him. But the murderer is actually an all-powerful shaman who’s looking to make a fortune from developers who have been trying to turn the island into a resort. Based on a play by Oh Taeseok, this film provided Lee Doo Yong the opportunity to explore themes outside of his typical repertoire.
Director
LEE Doo Yong
Lee debuted with the melodrama The Lost Wedding Veil (1970), but became known for his six taekwondo action films, particularly Manchurian Tiger (1974). His interest in shamanism led to The Early Years (1977), Muldori Village (1979) and The Hut (1980). By the 1980s, he was making some of his best works including The Last Witness (1980), The Trouble-Solving Broker (1981), Mulleya Mulleya (1983), The Oldest Son (1984), and Eunuch (1986).
