Program Note
In the first of Lee Doo Yong’s taekwondo films, Japanese karate instructor Sasaki, Chinese martial arts master Wang, and Korean taekwondo expert Lee fight over a chest of gold that’s earmarked for the Korean Independence Army. A box office success, the film propelled lead actor Han Yongcheol (later Charlie Shell), in his early twenties at the time, to action superstar status. Exhibiting clear influences from Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars and Bruce Lee’s Hong Kong action flicks, this film was criticized with other six similar action films, which were released in the same year, as being fairly unoriginal.
Director
LEE Doo Yong
Lee debuted with the melodrama The Lost Wedding Veil (1970), but became known for his six taekwondo action films, particularly Manchurian Tiger (1974). His interest in shamanism led to The Early Years (1977), Muldori Village (1979) and The Hut (1980). By the 1980s, he was making some of his best works including The Last Witness (1980), The Trouble-Solving Broker (1981), Mulleya Mulleya (1983), The Oldest Son (1984), and Eunuch (1986).
