Program Note
Asked, "Do you want to play football or do you want money?", the consensus of the teenage boys playing football was "money." In Thailand, where football wagering is illegal, these boys, without the means of making a good living, succumb to the lure of easy money and become gang members in a gambling ring. Unbeknownst to their bosses who control the local gambling, they form their own gang. With sudden riches, these boys go on a spending spree, buying expensive gifts for their girlfriends and a bicycle for a younger sibling. But once the bosses catch on to their act, the boys end up paying for their scheme. Similar to a film already released in Korea, Bangkok Dangerous(2000), this film uses the glossy images and fast-paced editing techniques influenced by music videos found in Thai-Hong Kong noir. With superb performances by the young actors, this film shows the technical improvement and structural assurance of Thai films today. (Hur Moon-Young)
