Program Note
Of this omnibus film, divided into four episodes, only 3 episodes remain, but nevertheless they are enough to deem Women of Yi-Dynasty an important film, both in a cinematic and a socio-historical sense. In the 1st episode "Wives should be submissive" In this case it is into death. Not wanting to end her life, the woman escapes, but is relentlessly pursued by her father who intends to kill her. In the 3rd episode, "The seven vaild causes for divorce" are outlined: Unable to get pregnant after 10 years of marriage, a woman has a relationship with her servant and becomes pregnant. Her life is threatened when her husband finds out. The 4th episode, "A court lady must live only for the king" features a court lady who has an affair with an unknown man in the palace. With help from other court ladies, the woman escapes with her child. However, during the process, she loses her husband. This film can be seen as a criticism of the Confucian patriarchal system during the Chosun dynasty. The brightest stars of the day--Kim Ji-Mi, Choi Eun-Hee--played the roles of the main characters.
