A father who walked out on his wife and three daughters fifteen years ago dies. At the funeral, his daughters meet their half-sister, who like them was also left behind. Happy to have found another sibling, the sisters ask her to come live with them. Thus begins the story of four sisters in a rustic home on Kamakura Beach. Based on a manga of the same name, the world of Our Little Sister is full of goodness. Nothing—not the memory of abandonment, unrequited love, nor the death of family—can break up the sisters, whose exude only happiness and innocence. This imbues the film with an enigmatic mood and gestures toward Kore-eda’s masterful ability to expose life's most wondrous moments in the smallest detail: A warm and spacious home, a train ride, a tranquil beach, fireworks in the summer night, and a cozy forest pathway. Other moments are also revealing. Images of a sister sound asleep, making liquor with plums from the yard, putting up paper windows, and reminiscing about grandmother from the scent in stowed-away clothes—moments that speak of family values and the growing bond between sisters.
