Program Note
Once again, David Lynch′s creative energies create a strange, dreamlike world that begins as a normal Hollywood film, but spirals into an increasingly absurd and confused jumble of intertwined plots. Rita, a dark-haired woman who suffers from amnesia after a car accident wanders the streets in a daze before stumbling upon Betty′s apartment. Betty, a Midwestern blonde who has come to the City of Angels seeking fame as an actress, takes Rita in and helps her to uncover her true identity. A first-rate thriller about one girl′s once-upon-a-time in Hollywood, Mulholland Drive revisits much of the same territory as a number of the director′s previous films-doppelgangers come and go, identities shift, as do time and space, hot girls and hair color-yet this is also Lynch′s most fully realized feature in years.

David Lynch was born in 1946 in Missoula, Montana. He graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and made a series of experimental shorts before his debut feature Eraserhead (1977). His films include The Elephant Man (1980), Dune (1984), Blue Velvet (1986), Wild at Heart (1990), Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992), Lost Highway (1997) and The Straight Story (1999).
