Director

Louis Malle
One of the great innovators of French ′ s New Wave, Malle alternated between documentary and fiction throughout his career. His list of acclaimed documentaries include The Fire Within, Calcutta, and God ′ s Country . It was, however, his feature films that truly established him as one of the world ′ s great directors. He made his feature debut with Diabolique in 1957.
His early New Wave films include Elevator to the Gallows (1957) and The Lovers (1958). After making Lacombe, Lucien (1974), Malle made his debut as an American director with Pretty Baby (1977). He continued his US success in 1980 with Atlantic City and in 1981 with My Dinner with Andre. He returned to France in 1987 to direct the autobiographical Goodbye Children. His other works include May Fools (1989), Damage (1994) and his last film, Vanya on 42nd Street .
