Program Note
Before the First World War, an Austrian, Jules, and a Frenchman, Jim, become friends. They share each other′s confidences, read and translate each other′s poems and visit each other. Later, they meet Catherine and both fall in love with her. Catherine marries Jules and Jim turns to his childhood girlfriend Gilberte. When war comes, the men fight on opposite sides. After the war, they renew their
friendship. When Jules tells Jim that Catherine has already left him once, Jim becomes Catherine′s lover. Jules accepts this, so as not to lose Catherine entirely. But Catherine finds out about Gilberte and renews her relationship with an old flame, Albert. Jim tells Catherine that he has decided to marry Gilberte. Catherine seems to take the news calmly, but then drives her car off abridge into a river. This is the story of three people in love, a love which does not affect their friendship, and about how their relationship evolves.
Director

Francois Truffaut
Born in 1932, Francois Truffaut began using films to escape the exigencies of reality at age seven. He left school to go to work at 14. One year later, he founded a film club, which brought him to the attention of influential cinema critic Andre Bazin.
In 1953, Truffaut worked as a critic/essayist for Les Cahiers du Cinema and in the January 1954 edition of that publication he published his landmark essay, ′A Certain Tendency in the French Cinema′. He also propounded the auteur theory. Hoping to put his auteur theory to practical use, he directed a short film, Une Visite (1954). He made his first feature, the intensely autobiographical The 400 Blows, in 1959. In 1961, he directed his masterpiece, Jules and Jim . He was considered the most popular and successful French film director ever. Other major films are Shoot the Pianist (1960), The Bride Wore Black (1968), Day for Night (1973) and The Woman Next Door (1981)
