The modernist of Thai cinema, Nonzee Nimibutr is back with a film about "sexuality". On the surface, <b>Jan Dara</b> is a film about growing up. However, ultimately, this film boldly depicts the double-faced nature of human beings through the theme of sexuality. 1940s in Bangkok. Jan Dara grows up unloved by his father who blames him for his mother′s death in childbrith. One person who looks after him is an aunt who ends up marrying his father. Jan Dara falls in love with a classmate at high school. All the while his relationships with his father deteriorate, and his sister, too, hates him. One day, a young woman moves in next door. Her name is Boon Luang and she once had an affair with Jan Dara′s father. Jan Dara becomes enchanted by her beauty, and starts to awaken to bodily pleasures. Slowly, he transforms into an egocentric man with violent rages. Nimibutr argues that male-dominated society allows men to express their anger and rage, to follow in the footsteps of the men who came before them, as Jan Dara tragically starts to resemble his father.
