Program Note
Set in American continent during the colonial between France and the Great Britain, the story follows the Great Snake warrior who pleads tribes to unite and keep the peace. The Great Snake is a problem to the Europeans who try to steal the land and resources from the Indians. They frame him for murder and kidnap his fiancee in attempt to get rid of him but in vain. The film was a hit in former East Germany for its unusual structure where Indians are the protagonist unlike typical Westerns of US. Under the pretense of pioneering, white people invaded America and Indians fought them to protect nature and tradition. Their glorified struggle is equivalent of the East Germany’s contempt for American ideology during the cold war. (CHO Young-jung)
