Program Note
This film is one of the famous ‘Rambler Series’ in Japanese Western films. A man comes from a wasteland and walks into the backstreets of a city carrying a guitar on his back. He gets into a fight in a bar and before he realizes, he is working for Yakuza. [The Rambling Guitarist] doesn’t look like a Western at first sight. Dark allies of the city, Yakuza and beautiful women remind us of Film Noir. The element of the Western can be found in the protagonist. He sings of solitude and wandering like a cowboy consoling himself with a guitar. He has unknown past and is excellent with the gun. He is unmistakably righteous though he doesn’t show it, just like all the heroes of Western. The power of this series is centered on this distinguished main character. (CHO Young-jung)
