Program Note
Sergio is a gay man who is a street cleaner. His life is filled with unrequited desires and taboo fantasies. He falls in love with a man on a motorcycle and tries to force his desires on him but to no avail. An unabashed look at the extreme side of gay subculture, the darkness that cloaks the entire film seems to symbolize the marginalization of the men whose very existence rarely finds expression in current society. The sequence at the end in which the character becomes one with the trash is absolutely brilliant. His becoming a ‘ghost’ functions as a remarkable entrance into the unreal as well as a powerful social message. Rodrigues’s immensely creative debut established the young director as an internationally renowned artist. (RHEE, Soue-won)
