Program Note
Kesha, a naive young man, takes a nap under a large tree in his village and is visited by the god Dutta in his dream. When he wakes, he lets everyone know about his vision. No one cares except for his mother and a few neighbors, but some are uncomfortable with Kesha’s stories: politicians and village elders. The appearance of Dutta poses no threat, but they do fear that people will listen to Kesha and create problems for the zone development they have been pursuing. True to their worries, Kesha’s story slowly spreads through the village, and the small conflict that had been simmering around the development and the election bubbles to the surface. Now a war of nerves between those who want to use Kesha’s dream to their own ends and those who want to quietly bury the whole story erupts. This black comedy from India is a searing criticism of the dishonesty, corruption and election by money rampant in a generation where faith in god is lost and only lust for power and money remains.
