Program Note
An undisputed masterpiece that is now acknowledged as a classic. It follows the life of Emma, a fatal beauty, in a loose adaptation of Gustave Flaubert’s famous novel, Madame Bovary. The characters become mysterious sculptures through the narration that runs through the film, while the landscape of the valley and the sound of classical music are overwhelming. This is another film that reflects on the extreme of the relationship of couple. The shot of Emma advancing through a grove of orange trees will surely be etched in viewers’ minds. (RHEE, Soue-won)
