Program Note
An extreme love story that illustrates the madness of obsessive and selfish love, [Francisca] tells the story of Jose Augusto and Camilo who fight over Francisca during Portugal’s troubled history following Brazil’s independence. Francisca marries the aristocrat Jose Augusto, but his love turns out to be an immature one, close to torture. As the last installment in the ‘Thwarted Love’ tetralogy, this film is an adaptation of a novel by Portugal’s modernist novelist Augustina Bessa-Luis. The level of monotonous and gloomy voices and minimalist acting reaches heights not found in any other film. (RHEE, Soue-won)
