Program Note
This masterpiece tells the tragic love story between Simao and Teresa, two lovers of noble families set in 18th century Portugal. It is considered a landmark piece in the history of European art cinema and is the third film in the ‘Thwarted Love’ tetralogy. The camera’s movements and the zoom show the relationships and the atmosphere between the characters. It also enables the viewer to relish the joy of discovering the exchange of glances through windows, which is repeated in the director’s recent films. The static shots that look like still-life paintings due to minimalist performances of the actors and their formulated dialog, reiterative narration, and the exchange of personal correspondence are reflections of the literary taste of the master who was partial to reference to traditional arts rather than modernism.
