Program Note
[Past and Present], first film of the ‘Thwarted Love’ tetralogy is being introduced in Korea for the first time. Vanda gathers her friends together to mourn her first husband’s death. Soon after her second husband Firmino jumps out the window out of jealously and heartache, the twin brother of her first husband arrives. This masterpiece uses the issues of the couple as an axis and lashes out at the bourgeois. The camera follows the characters who act as if their emotions have been eliminated, with classical music playing in the background, and emphasizes how more and more ridiculous their double-sidedness becomes. The last shot in the church remarkably summarizes the theme. (RHEE, Soue-won)
