[Peony Pavilion] is an operatic drama where Yonfan’s esthetic sense of visual art reaches its pinnacle. Lan falls in love with Cui-Hua, a Kunqu opera actress after watching her performance. Becoming an actress herself, Lan and Cui-Ha become intimate as they play lovers. Kunqu opera’s magnificent parade of colors and two beautiful actresses make it difficult to take one’s eyes away from the screen. Their lives as dramatic as the opera, love and friendship in the film are just as moving. The rueful yet beautiful atmosphere of the film visualizes the film’s original title borrowed from the opera, ‘walking through the paradise yet awakened by surprise.’ Again, the graceful narration is provided by Brigitte Lin.
