[A Certain Romance], Yonfan’s first feature, is about a girl’s journey to womanhood, as she learns how to navigate the terms of relationships after high school. Magi and Lily are best friends. Magi falls in love with a man she meets at the beach, while Lily struggles with the fact that her single father has begun to show interest in another woman. Screen is filled with brilliant images of freshness and tenderness of youth and first love. The film also says a great deal about his cinematic aesthetics. The story develops in the swimming pool and Ballet studio where physical beauty is evidently an attraction to viewers.
