Program Note
Justine and Michael celebrate their marriage with a sumptuous receptionat the home of her sister and brother-in-law. Meanwhile, the planet, Melancholia,is heading towards Earth. After the party, Justine falls into a deep depression. As they go through confusion and conflict, they resort to have quality conversation children when they wait to meet the end of the world. Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, used dramatically at the film’s close, provides the metaphorical framework for much of the film’s action. [Melancholia] suggests that the destruction of occidental culture is not merely the result of interplanetary movement, but more from the depression of members of the modern society. In that sense, the apocalypse might simply be a vision and the film twists the idea of so many apocalyptic films of Hollywood. Our world has not ended yet, but we are living in the world filled with images and illustions of the end of the world just like the planet Melancholia. (LEE Sang-yong)
