Program Note
In a village in the Punjab region, an occupied home is demolished overnight on the orders of the landlord. When the villagers hear the news in the morning, they protest. Old and ill, a man, a father, also tries to protest, but is pushed into the background without being able to say much. His son Melu, a rickshaw driver in the city, takes part in a labor strike and is wounded, then aimlessly wanders the streets. To these Untouchables?or Dalit in their own words?in neither the countryside nor the city is there any hope or the strength to create a new life. The traditional cry for charity, ‘Alms for a blind horse’, that fill the night time streets is only an empty echo in their lives. Based on Gurdial Singh’s novel the New Delhi-based director Gurvinder Singh, who is now best known for his documentaries, makes his feature debut. Singh portrays the truths of Indian society and its economic conditions, while capturing in detail how they have affected his characters. (KIM Byeongcheol)
