Program Note
Yoo Bong-Eun, a widowed hospital dormitory matron, has a younger boyfriend. In order to keep him by her side while maintaining a respectable front, she insists that he marry a nurse who lives in the dormitory. We can predict what happens next to some degree, but the powerful character doesn’t always do things the way we expect. This femme fatale who drives those around her to their downfall for her own desires is bold and unconventional, as though resisting to the new school of melodrama as characterized by [Love Me Once Again]. The conclusion of this passionate melodrama is pretty much set from the beginning. But even while being led to the preset conclusion, the film’s femme fatale is not quite defensive. And that attitude leaves a deep impression. The irony between two selves ? the social self, enforcing morals and rules, and the private self, led by forbidden desires ? is embodied in the main character, and her existence brought a very unique melodrama in the Korean film history.
