Program Note
Kim’s famous boxing film stars Kim Gi-su, who was a famous champion at the time. Long takes of boxing scenes are vivid and real as two sets of fists cut across the screen. However these realistic action scenes take up only a small portion of the running time and the film becomes the mixed genre of sports and family film. Along with his other film about baseball, the director Kim Kee-duk brings the popularity of boxing and baseball of that time into his films. A boxer, Yoon Jeong-ho, quits fighting when his opponent dies in the ring. His dead opponent’s brothers and sisters struggle to survive cleaning shoes and working in bars. They first blame Jeong-ho for their misfortune, but then become as close as a family. Their changing relationship is the main plot and the sub plot is the tension between the coach trying to bring him back to the ring and the mafia boss threatening to buy his victory. A noir visual style is evident in the film’s lighting and composition, while its emotional drive shows the influence of melodrama. Above all, the film is a good example of a minor genre, sports film, in its early form. (KANG Sowon)
