Program Note
Julian, Ramon, Juan, El Chato, Paco and Manolo are a group of low class youths wandering the impoverished streets of Madrid. To help Juan become a bullfighter, his friends steal money, and one of them eventually dies. Carlos Saura’s first feature represents Spanish Neo-Realism, and realistically shows the dark reality of unemployment, poverty and uncertain future. The fast paced editing, the extremely long shots of the running crowd, and the freeze frame at the end leaves a strong impression. (RHEE Soue-won)
