Program Note
Drained of all inspiration, Gianni hasn’t made a film for years when he finally gets to direct the movie debut of a TV star. Unfortunately, a leak in his Tuscan home ruins a 16th century fresco, and to avoid being sued he is forced to direct “Passion of Christ” for the local Good Friday celebrations. He tries to get out of the situation, but things just keep getting worse.
This is an Italian comedy full of humanity created by master director Carlo Mazzacurati. Well known in Korea for his roles in The Crocodile and After Love, actor Silvio Orlando superbly plays the lead. This self-reflective film is full of references about Italian cinema, specifically the exaggerated scene where the weather reporter assumes the role of Jesus, a satire on a real actor of the Mussolini era. Not only is the film hilarious in its well-timed jokes, but also amazing in its reflection and storytelling. The emergence of an angel at the beginning and ending of the film are a must-see in this competition favorite at this year’s Venice Film Festival. (RHEE Soue-won)
