Program Note
This is a realistic human dramatization of the activities of four photojournalists who documented the horrors of Apartheid accompanied by a series of love stories, based on the memoirs of Pulitzer Prize winners Greg Marinovich and Joao Silva. Apartheid was an extreme system of racial discrimination that ruled South Africa until Nelson Mandela was elected president in May of 1994 in the first free election in the history of the Republic of South Africa.
‘Bang Bang Club’ is the name of the foursome. The film occasionally stresses the individual or the group aspect as it deals with the fierce activities of the photographers who put their lives on the line, the extreme stress felt by each individual, and the friendships, love, and the relationships between them. It also poses questions of the ethical dilemmas inherent in photojournalism.
The fast-paced dramatic sequences, the powerful, delicately documentary-style camera work, sensitive characterization, and realistic performances are just few of the film’s impressive features. The performance by Ryan Philippe, well known to Korean audiences for [I Know What You Did Last Summer] and [Cruel Intentions], heightens the enjoyment. [The Bang Bang Club] is a film that possesses both commercial and artistic appeal, and is proof of the vitality of Canadian cinema along with [Incendies]. (JEON Chanil)
