Program Note
Carmen and Emeterio make up a 62-year-old couple. They spend uneventful days in the beach house that they built in Acapulco, Mexico. As they approach their last destination in life, their happiest time is when the entire family comes together on New Year’s Eve every year. This documentary is objective yet sincere in its portrayal of the daily lives of the elderly couple without trying to make it look pretty. The couple appreciate time being still and spend their days taking walks and enjoying meals in these fast times. When images like these have become familiar by the middle of the film, we find ourselves reflecting on the meaning of life. The director displays an outstanding eye and composes moments where the couple’s rhythm in life goes so well with the rhythm of nature and inanimate objects. Is it speaking of the naturalism of man returning to where he came from when he dies? This is a film that everyone who lives in an age with a life expectancy of 80 should watch. (RHEE Soue-won)
