Program Note
The film follows five ordinary people who lived their childhoods in the Soviet era, witnessed the regime’s collapse during their teenage years, and now live in post-Soviet Russia with its consistently changing political landscape. Borya and Lyuba got married and had a son named Mark, and they teach history at a school in Moscow. Andrei, who took advantage of newly emerging capitalism in Russia, recently opened his 17th French-made dress shirts shop. Olga, a single mother who used to be the most beautiful girl at school, works for a company that lends pool tables to clubs in a Moscow suburb. Once famous rock musician Ruslan is a subway station busker, playing the banjo to make ends meet. While their memories and perspectives differ and sometimes conflict, the film touches upon their shared experience of dreams and disillusionment with today’s Russia. (Jay JEON)
