Program Note
A documentary by a new Italian director that reviews the history of Korean cinema chronologically, based on interviews with directors Im Kwon-taek, Park Gwang-soo, Lee Hyun-sae, Lee Chang-dong, and Park Chan-wook. The directors talk about Korean society that they have lived in, the meaning of making films, and their difficulties and anecdotes along the way. Their major works are introduced through important scenes, giving the film significance in reviewing the history of Korean cinema.
It is quite obvious that Through Korean Cinema makes an effort to be faithful to the contents by having commentaries by film critics Kim Young-jin, Kim So-young, and Tony Raynes on the aesthetics of the directors and on Korean films. A strong point of the film is that it shows images of Korean society between interviews and creates a smooth flow without simply laying out scenes in order. This is a noteworthy film in the sense that it is the first documentary made by an Italian director about Korean cinema. (RHEE Soue-won)
