Program Note
A Japanese man takes out a 20-year-old phone card. Inside it, there are pictures of 4 women. The film sets out in search of these women and shows their past and present. In 1989, the Korean branch of Japanese company, Sumida sent a single fax and fired all its employees. Suddenly jobless, they protest in front of the company’s headquarter building in Japan. The four women protested fiercely for 8 months, during which many Japanese showed their support. Many of these supporters believe that these women changed their lives. What did they do to be so highly regarded by these Japanese people even till day?
In the movie, recorded films of the protests and the real women this story is based on are shown in a very intimate way. Eventually, the message is revealed: the past is not just a memory but the source of strength to live. Joined by a brief yet significant moment, the Sumida protestors and their Japanese supporters set off on a sentimental journey to the past. (LEE Seungmin)
