Teenagers gather to audition for the late Pina Bausch’s legendary Kontakthof because they simply want to dance. This black and white documentary is a simple yet touching portrayal of the audition process for amateur dancers, the rehearsals, as well as the premiere performance, while being as dramatically inspiring as a well-made feature film. Most importantly, Pina’s interpretation of dance as “contact” and not technique is noteworthy. This part speaks to the reasons Pina has been acknowledged as a legendary figure in the dance world. The two directors, acquaintances of Pina who respected her, illustrate dynamically and modestly how a performance becomes a work of recreation. Unlike other documentary filmmakers who often neglect the subject because they are busy revealing themselves, they bring legendary dancers and amateur dancers to the foreground, focusing on their conflicts and harmony.
