Program Note
Binder Jigjid, son of Jigjid Dejid who is the representative director from the golden age of Mongolian film, has inherited his father’s fame and passion for film. [Passion] is a documentary that chases after Binder’s destiny-like passion for film. Once radiant Mongolian films are now turning barren. Taken over by commercial movies mimicking Hollywood films, movies discussing reality and history of Mongolia are pushed aside. However, Binder cannot stop making films, and he continues to run on the icy road to meet his audience. The film honestly portrays the director’s concerns for financial success and oil prices, and the agony that crosses back and forth between cinematic conviction and despair. [Passion] follows into theaters he visits and silently witnesses the exhausting life of the director. The black and white, but radiant past and the colorful, but shabby present of Mongolian films curiously blend with the desolate but beautiful landscape of Mongolia. (CHO Young-jung)
