Program Note
Basharat, a talented young soccer player from Kashmir, gets an opportunity to train in Brazil, the motherland of his hero, Pele. The problem is that the Indian government refuses to issue him a passport because of his father-a former armed resistance force fighter. Tensions long buried by silence between a father who spent his life in political turbulence and a son who pours his passion into soccer starts to come to the fore.
On the surface, [Inshallah, Football[ is about a young man’s struggle to follow his dream of learning soccer abroad. However, unresolved political and ethnic conflicts surrounding the Kashmir region and generational conflicts between two men who don’t understand each other vividly coexist on the flip side of the film. Soccer is not just a simple athletic game, but also a supranational power that transcends politics and resolves conflicts. It is perhaps the beginning of harmonization “by God’s will”- Inshallah-of conflicts, which cannot be resolved by the will of the people. (CHO Young-jung)
