Program Note
Eminent law school professor Celal Tan’s family witnesses a shocking crime, which they proceed to conceal. As the family disintegrates at the disclosure of hypocrisy, Celal does his best to control the situation without losing face. The interchange of comedy and tragedy in this family’s story highlights the imaginative and witty talents of veteran Turkish filmmaker Onur Unlu. Through the irony of a professor who teaches law and a symbol of justice covering up the truth, the film presents itself as a black comedy critiquing a corrupted society. The mysterious construction of each family member’s private life is superb, and like his 2013 Thou Gild’st the Even, the filmmaker once again explores the subject of men’s instinctual fear.
