Program Note
On a cold winter day in Kars, an isolated village along the Turkish border, a railwayman, three Russian prostitute sisters and morbid obsession lead to a brutally tragic tale of revenge. Cold, which opens to the sounds of the wind, is visually arresting, with resonant deep focus shots of the train and train tracks crossing along the snow-covered landscape. Camera angles set at eye level when sitting in the living room of a Turkish household or the bar where the three Russian sisters work set in beautiful color tones are examples of the filmmaker’s meticulous touches. Men meandering through the patriarchal Turkish ways seem like time bombs. Perhaps this suggests the choice for the concluding bridge explosion: a reminder of reason helpless in the face of love.
